Gulai Kikil Power??!!

Updated 2010-This restaurant is no longer there.

I am in search for KIKIL (the chewy tendon) ...the one that i knew will have is GARUDA padang cuisine but now there is another one! YIPEE!!! Saw at the corner of my eye as I visited the bookstores at Kandahar street. The way they arrange the display of food is just like those nasi padang in Indonesia.I just cannot wait to try it!!

Just for appetisers....feed the "eyes" first...

Happy feasting!!!

Update:Went there at 11am on 2/1/09. No customer. But after we ordered, there were many coming in.

Look at the colourful display of food!! Mouth watering...dunno where to start. What to order? This is a typical Nasi Padang stall display in Indonesia.

Verdict: Yummy food at affordable price. Total cost spent about $20+.(4-5people)

Favourite: Sambal terong (brinjals chillies), fried chicken (the staff gave us 2 for the price of 1, yipee!), rendang (the tender beef has the musky charcoalled /burnt wood smell like those "rendang" cooked in Malay weddings), anchovies and peanuts, ayam bakar (Grilled chicken) is ok but when added with dollops of the kicap cili, YUM!

Brinjals chillies

Rendang

Anchovies and peanuts
Bergedil (potato ball)

Fried potato with chicken liver and gizzard

Fried chicken with floss
Grilled chicken

Dont forget to immerse the grilled chicken into the sweet spicy thick soya sauce.

Improvements needed (according to my humble tastebuds):

The siput (mini snails) in coconut gravy , we have difficulty sucking it out. Gave up half of it. Kikil not found because the staff told me that the "KIKIL" had just finished, so no more KIKIL to make GULAI KIKIL. I think they should always have GULAI KIKIL just like Garuda. because that sets them apart from other nasi padang stalls. The green chilli and red chilli paste is a bit bland. The lime juice although its freshly squeezed, its not that cold.

But overall, I like the combination of everything. It harmonise well together. The flavour can transport me back to Indonesia. But the funky modern English songs that were played kinda turned me off. They should play sort of Balinese...errr... traditional indonesian music as background. The furniture, the ambience is nice. I like the washing area for washing hands. The basin is made of the mortar ( where u grind the chillies into paste).

Love the whole experience!

Okay, now need to ta-pow home some KIKIL from Garuda Padang Cuisine at VIVOCITY (and perhaps my favourite RENDANG too) for dinner... hehe!

Kikil in Garuda is already chopped into bite-sized. But the kikil in Indonesia look some what like smooth "tentacles" of the octopus. The kikil (Garuda) is cooked till it melts in the mouth but the Indonesian ones have this chewy texture which I like.

any more? *racking the brains...

Eh, if u dip pisang goreng into a thick sweet but birds eye chilli spicy soya sauce, MAMAMIA VAVAOOM! (Malaysia road side stalls, the nearest is Kotaraya Singgah Selalu restaurant JB)

Ok, How to ....

Eh, not hot meh? This is cool, I love to visit this floating market!

OUCH Owwwwww!!!!(a must see!)

Okay the answer is revealed (31.12.08)
Location: Woodlands Centre Road
(old bus interchange/previous custom check point to Johor)
time: 4am
(there were 3 coffeeshops that are still opened at this hour)

I was roaming at this area at 4am (don't ask me why, long story...) with a friend who had deep-rooted cravings for pisang goreng/banana fritters. The cravings became wild especially nearing "Subuh" (early morning) so here we were...

This makcik stall sells some kuehs and pisang goreng. Though its not that hot but its still good. I remembered eating it piping hot once upon a time , sedap. But at least, with some hot piping teh tarek, my friend's craving has been satisfied mildly.

I was actually surprised to see many stalls are open at this time.... Some stalls are getting ready to open too. And this area is brightly lit .... The fruits stalls are open and its wide range of fruits are cheap! There are some people waiting to board the "bus kilang" (blue malaysian factory bus).

This is really an eye-opener. Woodlands centre road, another "gerek" place to explore. And if u bring along ur passport, u can even walk to johor from here.... hehe!

fyi-I did pass by KTM but it look so dim that I assume the whole place was closed....still assuming. I wonder what time they closed....

pictures are coming up....on new year's eve, photobucket seems to lag...

To be continued, my late night journey is not over yet.....

Subject: RE: Enquiry regarding Haagen Dazs Ice Cream
From: sg.haagen-dazs@genmills.com

Dear ......

Thank you for your email to us on the subject of “Enquiry regarding Haagen Dazs Ice Cream”.

We are pleased to inform you that although Häagen-Dazs is not specifically certified Halal, it is made under processes which meet very stringent sanitary and quality requirements.
The only animal products in Häagen-Dazs products are fresh cream, skimmed milk and egg yolk. None of our ingredients are derived from pigs. The gelling agent used in our products is plant based (pectin).

Muslims may wish to avoid Häagen-Dazs products containing alcohol for example Baileys ice cream and Häagen-Dazs Baileys Stick Bar products which contain less than 0.5% alcohol per 100 ml of product. For your information, some of our ice cream (e.g. Vanilla based) contain a very small amount of alcohol (0.20%) due to the flavor which is alcohol based.

Please be advised that ingredient labels of our products should always be read prior to consumption to determine content.

Hope this information is useful to you.
We look forward to your continued support of Häagen-Dazs.
Thank you

Best regards,
The Häagen-Dazs Team

p.s: Please take note that this is not a chain email. It is written by a close friend of mine writing in to Haagen Dazs enquiring on its HALALness.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
BEN & JERRY..

Thank you for your inquiry. Our ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet do not contain any animal based products, but they are not certified Halal. Most of our products contain vanilla extract or extract for natural flavorings, which contain trace amounts of alcohol. We believe any amount of alcohol in our products would keep them from being Halal. We hope this information helps you to make a decision whether or not to try our products. (from here )

Road Trip day 7-Putrajaya/Kajang/Selangor/Seremban

Last day of the road trip...

Reached Putrajaya mosque in Subuh. Subhanallah such a magnificent mosque. I had been here many times but it never fail to capture my attention.I stared in awe...everytime.(Sorry did not take any photos , too dark)

Head to Selangor and roam around then go to Kajang...

The previous attempts to eat at R & R branch of Satay Kajang has failed me miserably. The standards are way below ......

So I decided to eat at its original branch in Kajang itself where the name was borne.

Well, the satay is much better than the R &R branch but I still feel that the first time I tasted (the taxi driver recommend to us saying that the satay in this branch tasted best, indeed it was!) it was the BEST! And they have all the meat that I wanted too. Here the satay didn't come hot and piping (as expected) and i cannot get some meat like rabbit, fish ...

But okeylah, it curb my kajang "satay desires"..hehhe!

P.s: I did try finding my nasi paku again....but failed. I did changed the settings like dvpro suggested (thanks!) but ....??? SO give up...i might as well, make my own...rice +nail ...hehe!

Seremban

Reached there around 8am but some are not ready yet...but searching for my FAVORITE apam balik stall (cannot find) but luckily there is one Apam stall. YEAH!! Feast ur eyes...

Looking around....

Photobucket

Wajik
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Then I saw how blackish brown this RENDANG is...calling out to me "Buy me! buy me!" and so I did...It was authntically an indonesian dry rendang. SEDAPlicious! No need to go Indonesia...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Then after a few rounds of the morning make shift market/bazaar, we went to a nearby food centre:

Photobucket

(there was a signage saying OKU (orang kurang upaya /handicapped people )get free food...such generosity!

I think this place is popular with its chicken rice, because I saw non-stop order of it...

Photobucket

The chicken came with chilli sauce...
Photobucket

Requested for no chilli sauce for kids

Photobucket

Tried the laksa
Photobucket

The botled thingy contains "budu"-northern Malaysia specialty . It is fermented fish sauce....It adds some taste to the laksa. Nice!

Photobucket

This is cute. Ordered some hot drinks and saw some cubes of ices around it to cool down the drinks....or perhaps if u like, u can add to ur drinks like teh ice or somethin...

Photobucket

Okay this is one Penang specialty -Kway Teow Tng
Photobucket

The broth is yum yum! The noodles are smooth and slipperily good!Just nice ...a healthy breakfast..for the tummy.

Photobucket

Actually I was craving for Penang famous Char Kway Teow but I cannot find any HALAL ones. Mamak stalls only sell their indian version of kway teow goreng... But then I did find one at Ipoh...(Yeah, search high and low for HALAL char kway teow in Penang but cannot find so I gave up and I found it at Ipoh but then it was closing....*sigh..read it on later...)

Then we head to hotel, pack up and then roam around for lunch...

Check my GPS and found some yummy POIs but this one is closed...
Photobucket

so head to my favourite SUBWAY!!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Then roam around Penang....and later head to Ipoh...

Previous post on Penang:

http://putri-berendam.blogspot.com/2008/01/penang.html

Ok, lets go to IPOH....

Stop at the food centre near Stadium Ipoh beside the fire station
Photobucket

Found char kway teow (chinese style but HALAL certified)
Photobucket

But its closing...they are washing the utensils already...

Photobucket
This malay couple stall sell some yuummy NASI GORENG! And their char kway teow is not bad too (no cockles unlike the stall beside) . They are friendly and full of warmth. Even my kids treat them like their grandparents.

Photobucket

The laksa is similar to penang asam laksa.

Photobucket

Their nasi goreng is a MUST-TRY!!
Photobucket

In the morning, we were told by some malaysian customers here that there is some yummy roti canai by indian muslim and also char kway teow by chinese muslims at far end. *sigh...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Then head to Nasi Ganja aka "cannabis rice" .(wait before the narcotics come and find us, let me clarify, there isnt any cannabis used in the ingredients. Its name was derived because it was so yummy and addicitve that its customers kept coming back for more...) We were the last customer, we reached there at 7pm. They were closing actually but allow us to pick the leftover dishes. Too bad, we cannot taste the famous ayam merah....

Photobucket

Photobucket

And so we tasted its leftover dishes...it was really addictive! We get to taste the mutton meat which melt in the mouth and the gravy was mammaia..sedap!!

Photobucket

Photobucket

So I wonder how will the ayam merah and other super delicious dishes taste like? Hmm..i think i need to revisit this place again perhaps in the morning heeh!!

Photobucket

Of course , not forgetting Ipoh white coffee....and teh o limau ice!

Photobucket

Roam around Ipoh town
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Satay Kajang @ Sungei Buluh R & R branch
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

This road trip had been so fruitful. We tasted 2 of the BEST nasi Kandar. One in Penang (beside Kapitan Keling mosque) and the other one in Ipoh...truly wonderful. Now, this is what Nasi Kandar should taste like.....Once u taste this, u cannot anyhow eat NAsi Kandar anymore, u will tend to compare even the Nasi Kandar Pelita, or Yaseen or Line clear is no match for them (sorry fans..)...

But I cannot say the same for Kajang Satay....such a letdown...

Need to rest, head to Seremban RSA hotel RM49 per nite (south bound)....
