West Coast BBQ seafood (ayer rajah)

West Coast BBQ @ ayer rajah food centre
closed on mondays
Open till late night

Always try the front rows of stalls in Ayer rajah but this time, I went to the inner rows of stalls. Have wide varieties of food available. I was here quite late at night but some stalls are stillopen.

Anyway, tried their sambal sting ray. It was great! Fresh and yummy! Price about $12 depends on the size of sting ray available. I was their last customer at 12 am. The lady was very polite and display good customer service. Even greets customer "Sir".. (where can u get that kind of politeness in hawker centre? My first time..)

I just felt like eating fish only (like cat)so no room for other stuff in the menu. But will look forwaard to future visits insya-Allah.

My makan kaki ordered some roti john. It was nice. Served piping hot.Crispy outside and soft in the middle with tiny bits of meat. It was good for supper. The "'orangey" mee siam also looks good..calling out to me to try but maybe next time...

Dont forget to order some teh tarek or teh ice....

Saturday

Firdaus eatery

Hougang ave 8, blk 644

Previously was called BEST PRATA and then later taken over by indian muslim. I love their hot piping soft pratas and their fish curry. SHIOK! They made it fresh for u only when u order, so wait 5-10mins. Their pata kosong (plain) also soft. Is the mamak from malaysia? hehehe..I know Malaysians made great soft prata koosong.

opposite , there is chinese coffeeshop called new york or something (blk 632). The indian stall also has nice pratas. Before the "birth" of firdaus, i often tapow the pratas with added fish curry and let it soaked on my journey home. Then WOW! Eat shiok..the pratas has soaked and soggy with curry goodness.

The sardine curry puff is nice too. Though not "delicious looking". It was red spicy and sedap plus this is the first time, I saw hardboiled egg pieces in sardine curry puff.

eh, STUDENTS in uniform, get DISCOUNTS!!

fyi-Nurul, S'pore idol contestant once featured this eatery as one of her favourite makan place and its near her flat.

Pelangi food court @ city plaza

Pelangi food court
City plaza

This is one of my favourite places. I grew up eating here. From pelangi western family restaurant to the yummy trio foodcourt to current 4 stalls . I called the yummy trio because the 3 stalls are very GOOD! They are the fish and chips , pizza and steak. There are many stalls that come and go but these 3 stand their ground and their fans kept coming back for more....U can feel the cooks cook from their heart thru their food.

Even my ang-moh tourist love the FISH and chip so much that he said that it is the BEST in singapore. it's a well-kept secret that is why u cannot find them in makan sutra or similar shows. Their popularity is spread thru word of mouth...Many came with big crowds and left with big tummies hehe!

The steak stall was known as ALAMOs used to have big steaks, big portions of mashed poatoes and there are many items in the menus. They are more mexican grill. I like the beef spring rolls. It was piping hot and was packed to the brim with yummy minced beef. And another HOT favourite is the beef RIBS! So big, as big as ur arm length cost about $15 i think. The rib was soft succulent juicy and shiok! Sorry tony romas, urs also "kalah" (lose)
Alas those were its hey days...

currently after a makeover, only the steak is by the same owner. The fish and chips man has retired, the pizza man has passed down its pizza to younger generation but its not as yummy...the steak is good but its not as lavish as last time.

Anyway, the steaks are normally cooked welldone to suit the malay community who hates to see any gory blood dripping down. But u can request medium rare, medium well... The owner is very friendly man. Maybe I can ask him to cook for me his speaciality ribs one day...hmm..Why isnt the ribs on the menu anymore? so sadz..

anyway, yesterday the steaks at MAks reminded me of this favourite place that I've "abandoned" hheeh! So 11am, i trotted down..I have not been here for ages , probably a year. This place has been done up to make it more cosier and an air of sophistication is added thru its furnishings. I like it!

Ordered nasi padang -cost about $6, okeylah..but expensive. Rendang not bad but a bit tough..

Now the moment that I've been waiting for...

Steak-Yummy! Exactly like it was back then...only slightly smaller. Definitely in love with the salad. This is the only salad I ever loved..got raisins, peach, pineapple, greenies and alfalfa kind of sprout. Of course last time, the peach was BIG portion..but the quality is still the same! Felt like a kid all over again..

p.s: oh, there is claypot stall too. They sell "kampung porridge" $6 and claypot dishes.

1901 hotdog

1901 is a Malaysian franchise hotdog chain. They do have local outlets in Singapore but their beef hotdog is not as tasty as the ones in Malaysia. Check out juicy and yummy favourite CHICAGO beef hotdog! YUMMIEST!

Did try the viking hotdogs in JB years back too, nice...prefer this one though.

singapore outlets: suntec, compass point(sengkang) and tampines mall.

Friday

Mak's place the Hawkerant

Century egg porridge with sotong

This is one of the place that sells great porridge. I think abt $4.Great for people like me....

Char kway teow -A Must TRY!!! Yummy with lots of cooked but not rubbery cockles ARGH! so shiok!! I think abt $4. Normally if eat at Banquet outlets, insufficient but this one is generous servings and its GOOD!!The sambal belacan gives an xtra Kick!

One of the recommendations in food forums is their black pepper steak. I like the black pepper which uses fresh black pepper corns crushed. Steak is soft (like in Zain's cafe) but unlike those in Eatzi , the meat is unlike typical steak ($8.90 only how to compare?!)Nice. I like the sauce. I know the pic does not really show the steak but I'm too hungry...so I just take one shot...hehe!

Thai spicy fried rice $3.90
a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_To3fMuO-8Hs/R3UWra4YuhI/AAAAAAAAEAk/ossjsy84LSo/s1600-h/PC260015.JPG">

Been wanting to come here for ages...but no chance. Normally I would rush to my class around this vicinity. Anyway, been cooping at home for a week due to my illness. So I think its time, I have a change of taste...

Mak's place
401 changi road
closed on monday
daily 4.30pm-1am
tel;68447656
(for reservations)

Nearest MRT: Kembangan , near Kassim Mosque)

Went in the evening to avoid the night crowd. Mak also has an aircon space for those who wants comfort and in big crowds or big families. Perhaps price is different. Because, I only see a family there...kinda empty..

I know their specialities are buttered prawns, calamaris, seafood..and I saw one yummy looking fried fish like gurame style so appetizing..but WAIT! I'm on the road to the big R:ecovery

VERDICT: DELICIOUS!Very generous with their food. Lots of cockles, taugeh, big fresh prawns, ..WORTH IT! Sambal belacan tasted good like typical malay one and their TEH HALIA also shiok! Got Gajah (large) size also !Looking forward for next visit with bigger dollar notes to spend on PRAWNS, FISH and lots of SEAFOOD....and when I'm much , much better..of course..insya-allah.

Saturday

Restoran Bariani POWER!

The menu..click on image to enlarge.

When we enter the shop, there were hardboiled brownish egg (with shell intact)on the tables. But the eggs did not move me as much as their briyani. Perhaps, I've tasted better in LArkin bus interchange and indonesia. If I'm not wrong, its called Telur pindang some sort of herbal eggs but not as strong as the chinese herbal tea egg.

Lucky me, I got the "twin yolk"...

BP stands for Batu Pahat. 2-3hours of bus journey from LARKIN bus interchange. They are many similar stalls around batu pahat but this is the original famous one. They are famous for briyani gam. Why the name? i asked the staff and she told us because the meat is cooked with the rice. In singapore the famous ones are called BRIYANI DAM-similarly cooked meat cooked with the rice but the method of cooking is different.

The rice here is so soft , I sense that it could be steamed before served. As i snoop around the stall, I was RIGHT! Behind the shop, there are many large steamers. The cook was a 30-40 yr old man. He was shy to come forward.

pickled cucumber

VERDICT: It was ULTIMATELY YUMMY! Though I am a little india fan and has frequent briyani stalls in my lifetime, this has got to be the BEST! The rice is fluffy soft because they STEAM it. The mutton or beef is exceptionally soft succulent and goes well with the dalca curry given and acaar timun. A definite must COME back and eat again...and again..

If u think their servings are mountainous ones like in Singapore..Fear not! This BP briyani are just nice for 1 person per plate and with reasonable price. About RM7 per briyani gam. Other normal briyani are cheaper..

This is part of the wonderful crew behind the makings of the BRIYANI POWER, batu pahat style..

Eh, if u happen to wed in BP, cater from them and invite me...(heheh!)Call the number above...

p.s: they also have a branch in Shah alam. So if u visit KL, why not ?

Tuesday

YASSEEN NAsi Kandar KL

This place is being praised by many. Read on...

The first time I tried nasi kandar was in KL too but PELITA nasi kandar opposite CORUS hotel near KLCC twin tower (walking distance). It was a Shiok experience because the curry is exceptionally good. The combination of food and curries really is great. But I was told the ones in PENANG, the ori (original) is much, much powerful..oh, ok I better dont get carried away...

YASEEN NASI KANDAR
351 jalan tunku Abdul rahman (near Chow kit area)

As compared to pelita, I felt pelita is more modern and commercialised. Here its smaller and the food is typical mamak food but the taste is GEREK!

If u want to know why its called "KANDAR"...

I dunno what to choose...too many to choose " PICK me!!" heh! And so I did. The curry crab seems to be calling out to me...and so I select the big crab!Costly about RM12 but worth it! It was YUMMY and fresh! i also choose fish roe and soft succulent mutton. Power!

I wanted to eat later and let the rice soaked up all the curry. The rice was packed in plastic before being wrapped with newspaper.

Roti John Originator....

Shukor stall makanan istimewa
Serangoon garden food centre
9.30am-9.30pm

Roti john is widely famous in Singapore and Malaysia. But do u know where it originates? Right here in a little red dot, Singapore. Previously from botanic gardens aka taman serasi food centre and move to a serangoon gaarden food centre opposite CHOMP chomp.

Long,long time ago....
I was told that a caucasian man came up to this pakcik and wanted egg with bread and so this pakcik came up with Roti John! (fyi-John is the caucasian man name)Rcently, there is a book on food all over singapore and this famous roti john is one of them.

This is one authentic roti john that needs NO special sauce, mayonaise or any fancy chilli sauce. So shiok to eat it on its own. Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. Dont order the typical roti john (without any meat) but go to the meaaty version! Grrr!

Beef roti john $3.50

Chicken+cheese roti john=$4

It was so delicious that we order for seconds but different flavour, we asked for the chicken and cheese together (additional 50cents). It was GEREKlicious!

Soon Kueh @ Genie

MY GENIE GOURMET
32 LOR 1 REALTY PARK
Opening Hrs:
8am - 6pm
HALAL-certified

One of the blog visitors is searching for soon-kueh and so I also join in search for SOON KUEHS...

I've tried many different soon kueh and thought that it is all veggies and tasted quite bland without the thick black dipping sauce. Don't really fancy but since
Makansutra has given this 3 bowls RATING-"DIE die must try!" so...here I come!!

U can opt for mixed in one box or same flavour for all. The mini size is just nice for those who dont really like veggies. Also the glutinuous skin wont make u "muak"/"jelak" because its small.

I tapow the mini soon-kueh. 5 small pieces for $3 i think. The vegetarian soon kuehs (turnips, carrots and mushrooms) are all TASTY! No need dipping sauce.Even the kuchai (vege used in mee siam) soon kueh is nice.

Cahaya stall at Far east plaza

Location:
Far east plaza

Tel: 67348434
HALAL-certified
This is one of my favourite food haunts during my school days.Back then, cahaya and puncak (beside) is one of the popular amongst youth. Every lunch hour, it will be packed with youngsters and workers. Difficult to get seats. But after years of not patronising this stall, I've decided to reminisces the past...

This time, the place is not as packed. Wonder why...
The place looks the same...not much changes except the prices.

Someone took our order. She looked familiar.Eh, this chinese auntie is the same auntie who took my orders many years back. She dont look aged at all. She look as young as years back, wonder what's her secret...

The menu. click on image to enlarge.

Sotong char kuey and wantan fried crispily.Love the charkuey eaten with mayonaise but the wantan too crispy till "chao-ta" (burnt at sides).$4 a plate.Suggested by the stall aunty. average taste.

Hokkien mee was a thumbs-UP! Delicious..

Laksa looks appetizing but lack something. Taste ok.

This Hongkong noodles doennt look appetizing. We push it around not wanting to eat it thinking that it could be wrong order...hhee!But it was nice! Only that prefer more seafood/meat...

Roasted chicken rice is good. But no soup given, must order separately, why eh? Auntie suggested fish ball soup.Soup is not bad..
Overall verdict: it's not as tasty as I remembered it to be...

2 chicken rice+hokkien mee+laksa+charkuey wantan+2 tea+2green tea+cofee=$28 (do the math! Food about $4-$5 each. Last time $2.50...hehhe! )
